Baking Homeade Bread…Somethin’ is better than nothin’

Years ago, baking bread would flat-out intimidate me. I would bake it few and far between because it always felt overwhelming, and it always turned out far from “perfect.” But, once I committed to having homemade bread in the house more frequently, each time I baked it just seemed to get a little easier- and they turned out a little better. Don’t get me wrong, today my breads are far from perfection but the conclusion I have come to is – something is better than nothing.

So, if maintaining a sourdough starter is anxiety inducing for you, try a yeast bread that is a one-day process. If kneading by hand annoys you, start using the mixer to do the work for you. But just go for it. The smell of baking bread in the kitchen is worth the time and experimentation- and your kids will start to ask for Mom’s bread over store-bought- which always helps with kitchen motivation!

Now I am at a point where I have my tried-and-true recipes for sandwich bread, dinner rolls, biscuits, pepperoni rolls and the like, that I use practically weekly. But then I also enjoying experimenting with different flours, sourdough and grain blends. Some turn out great, and well…some…go to the chickens.
